Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) is an international, independent, medical humanitarian organisation that delivers emergency aid to people affected by armed conflict, epidemics, healthcare exclusion, and natural disasters. MSF offers assistance to people based only on need and irrespective of race, religion, gender or political affiliation.

MSF International is the legal entity that binds MSF??s 24 sections, 25 associations and other offices together. Registered in Switzerland, MSF International provides coordination, information and support to the MSF Movement, as well as implements international projects and initiatives as requested.

Medical Working Groups (WG) in MSF produce several categories of intersectional medical documents (protocols, policies, guidance, manuals, position papers) for the whole Movement. The objective of these documents is to disseminate adapted medical knowledge to help analyse and understand the situation and implement a rapid quality response in the field.

The International Medical Coordination Office aims at building a pool of medical editors that could help the WGs improve the quality of medical documents before translation. The position is there to ensure high-quality guiding medical documents for use in resource-limited areas.

The medical editor is part of the International Medical Coordination Office of MSF International. He/she reports to the International Medical Coordinator (IMC), interact and plans the editing part with the Translation Coordinator, and works closely with the International Medical Coordination Officer and the Working Groups in all Operational Centres of MSF.

The purpose of the position is to ensure the quality production of intersectional medical documents validated by the DirMed platform.

This includes:

  •  Editing the content of existing intersectional medical documents by looking at inconsistencies, errors, and accuracy;
  •  Checking the quality of the information provided to the reader e.g. that the information is relevant, scientifically sound, up to date, complete, concise, coherent, in line with MSF??s editorial style, and adapted to MSF??s operational environment.
  •  Following the production and quality assurance process of new intersectional medical documents validated by the DirMed platform;

  •  Addressing any inconsistencies, errors, and need for updates in medical documents;
  •  Ensuring terminology is consistent and accurate: she/he revises scientific language for usage, flow, and clarity. She/He reduces awkward phrasing, biased language, and jargon that is inappropriate for the audience;
  •  Ensuring that the documents are easily understandable and do not leave any room for doubts or different interpretations;
  •  Ensuring that facts, data, and scientific units have been used consistently;
  •  She/He identifies lapses in clarity, missing information, and problems in logic and queries the WGs focal points about those problems;
  •  S/He discusses with the authors any overlooked inconsistencies or information missing as well as any final clarifications;
  •  He/she checks the final documents, together with the author before dissemination;
  •  He/she provides input on the structure of new documents and validates it, based on the concept note approved by the medical directors;
  •  Upon request, he/she provides the author(s) with input during the writing process;
  •  He/she checks if the text is backed up with evidence and reviews the quality and accuracy of references, footnotes, glossary, and abbreviations as provided by the author(s);
  •  Discuss and integrate with the author(s) the language editing suggestions;
  •  Check the final text to be sent to the Translation coordinator;
  •  Respond to questions on the content from the Translation coordinator.

  •  Medical diploma as a doctor or nurse
  •  Experience of at least 5 years with medical editing
  •  Field experience with MSF or other international organizations working in similar contexts preferred
